1. JJ has clashed with his parents over his homosexuality in the past, but it's not what you think; they were more inclined to shelter and coddle him when he came out, and worried very much over him possibly getting hurt. JJ has had to try and beat it into their heads that being gay does not equal being fragile, and has not wholly succeeded. He loves his parents very much, but visiting them is very frustrating to him because, without fail, one of them will express concern about the suitability of his profession for him.
2. It's not so much that he doesn't understand that Dee isn't interested. It's that he hopes, someday, to get Dee interested.
3. In truth, he was thinking of Drake as a potential boyfriend for a long time before that kiss, in the back of his head; he just discounted the possibility at every turn, because he was so focused on chasing Dee that other prospects failed to entirely register; and anyway, Drake was straight, right?
