[Fic] KH2 drabbleset, Pas de Trois

Ha! The bunny list helps!

Title: Pas de Trois
Words: ~500 altogether
Pairing: Sora/Kairi, SoRiKai implied
Rating: PG-ish I guess
Notes: These could be a prequel to that other SoRiKai I'm plotting. They're what inspired it, anyway.
Summary: Sometimes, it's a tricky dance to learn.

Riku - Outskirts

It is one of Riku's embarrassments that he knows how to waltz.

He learned at age eight, in a living room cleared of furniture, his mother giving her rare sweet laugh as she guided her son through the steps, keeping the rhythm, one-two-three, one-two-three-- it is a memory he hoards to himself, too precious and too close to share. But it comes out nonetheless that he can waltz, and he always feels, with heat in his face, as if he should be explaining why.

But Kairi comes to him one day and she doesn't ask why, when she asks him for lessons. And he still remembers, well enough that he can only say yes. And so they step and they spin on his patio, one-two-three, one-two-three, and she laughs as it comes together and he lets show a smile that hides the sting of sadness; he knows she wants to learn this for Sora.

It seems to him then that they are a waltz - three hearts keep time, but only two can dance.

Kairi - Heartland

Kairi is many things unbecoming of a princess.

Though born in a castle, she has no royal bearing. She wears short skirts and passes her time with boys, tarries at the beach and comes home damp and trailing sand. She has been uncharitable before, known fear and skirted the edge of hate. She takes to battle with a most unladylike fervor, and would follow her friends to the ends of the worlds, had she only a weapon of her own. And perhaps even these do not disqualify her, but then there is the way she loves: steady, unwavering, ardent and faithful and wrong.

Light following twilight, it's backwards, she feels so backwards as they sway and rise. She holds him tight and basks in his strength, and as she learns the steps, she laughs, to hide the thing that feels like guilt.

What kind of princess, when she has the sky, longs for the horizon too?

Sora - Kingdom

A paopu fruit has two leaves.

That's the only thing holding Sora back, sometimes - the legend doesn't really say if you can share it with more than one person, and more than once that thought has stopped him short, his glove inches away from the star-shaped fruits. Maybe it's not even true and it's just a ceremony, but he hasn't been the Keyblade Master this long without understanding the power of belief. And if one of them doesn't believe the fruit can work three ways... He doesn't want to leave anyone behind.

It frustrates him, builds up in his chest until he has to scream, because he's seen their dance, and he understands. And they don't get it yet, that good things come in threes, waltz steps and hearts and the points on a crown.

So he waits. And until he's sure they both understand, he won't pick their paopu. He's holding out for one with three leaves, anyway.
