My day in long, rambling summation
Because I heard once that some people do this totally crazy thing with their journals - are you sitting down? This might shock you - they actually write about their day. Revolutionary, huh? I just gotta jump on that bandwagon, yo.
... you can tell how much I've been sleeping this week. XD
My plans were to buy some fabric and other supplies for my Schala stikfa, buy breakfast, and then investigate stikfa availability at Atomic Comics. Simple enough, easily accomplished. My iPod pulled CALLING and then Ready Steady Go as the first two songs when I turned it on, so that boded well for the day.
The stuff I needed at Jo-Ann's was pretty easy to find. Tiny gold ribbon, blue embroidery floss, light purple fabric, all located with little difficulty. While I was there, I even discovered a decent-sized bottle of gold acrylic paint that billed itself as being for use on "any paintable surface". Whoa! That means it should stick to my Gambino accessories easily, right? Score! So I grabbed that too.
Atomic Comics does, in fact, have stikfas. Boy, do they ever have stikfas. I'm surprised I've never noticed them before, unless they JUST STARTED carrying them or something. But anyway, yes. They have stikfas. Including the basic blister packs. This is a Good Thing, since now I don't necessarily have to pay $7.77 shipping from Singapore when I want a plain one. (Though I have some doubts about these, addressed later.)
And OMG they have the coolest FMA pins. I got this lovely brushed-metal one of the snake-and-cross symbol. V. classy.
I totally won at time management this morning, too. I finished up at and left Jo-Ann's exactly in time to get to McDonald's for breakfast. (... yes, I do actually like McDonald's and buying breakfast there is a rare treat. omgshutup don't judge meeeee.) After that, I got to the bus stop mere minutes before the bus arrived, and finished up at Atomic Comics just in time to catch the bus going back. There was not a wasted minute all morning. It rocked. XD
So... stikfas.
Yeah. The hobby hasn't consumed me yet, but it's poised to do so, let me assure you. I can count every jagged fang in that gaping maw, and I'm pretty sure I can see its uvula.
I bought the one tan male blister pack they had at Atomic Comics. I was tempted to go for the Legionnaire set, but no - as shiny as it is, that's more than twice as expensive and I'm working on a budget here, need some wiggle room and I might wanna pick something up at the art store while that sale's still going. Sorry, Legionnaire, you'll have to wait.
I snapped him out and put him together shortly after getting home, and I have to say, he seems inferior in quality to the one I got direct from the website. That one, my tan female who's going to become Schala, snapped together with relative ease, and her joints move really nicely, very smooth and easy. The one I got from Atomic Comics, though... he wasmore of a nightmare than stikfas usually are to put together, and he has some serious movement issues. His joints are really tight, and a lot of them squeak when I move them.
I don't know what the deal is. I mean, it was packaged exactly the way the female was, it's the same company, he's not a cheap knockoff. But his quality is distinctly less. It doesn't bode well for the future of my hobby if this is typical of the quality I can expect from the stikfas at Atomic Comics. I mean, I really appreciate not having to pay for shipping, and the quality is acceptable, but definitely not optimal... and given that I want to sell these, um, I kind of would like optimal quality.
Eh, well. There's other retailers in the area. Atomic Comics also oesn't seem to sell the females in tan, so I ought to be exploring other options anyway.
I think I'm just about ready to start customizing Schala. I'm not sure in hindsight that this fabric is the right shade of purple, though, and it's kind of sheer. I may need to line it. But the only lining material I have is a more of a wine purple than a delicate lavender... definitely won't blend in well. And I want to make her a cloak, so the blending really is necessary. Bleh... maybe for the cloak at least I can just double up the material. Also, I should've thought to pick up some snaps or something at Jo-Ann's.... eh. C'est la vie.
Today, for some reason, my lower back is extremely stiff and sore. I have no clue what I did to it, but ow. x_o
Also, my niece and nephew. Aaargh. We tell them a million times that the water in the pond out back is Not For Touching, and what do they do? They get their faces dirty playing in the backyard and then wash their faces with water from the pond. And then the nephew takes a bath, FLOODS THE BATHROOM, and apparently does so badly enough that the siding of the tub falls off. aaaaaaagh.
Whitney, if the place is a shambles when you visit, it's because of the children. The children of DOOM.
Despite tiredness and muscle aches and Children of Doom, though, it's been a good day. We recorded the GaiaCast panel today, I got the stuff done that I planned to do, and I've got a turkey breast roasting in the oven and it smells delicious. :D Even if it is distressingly brain-shaped.
