Maybe it was that he was torn between doing the brave, borderline heroic thing and facing Davy Jones, and just RUNNING VERY FAR AWAY VERY FAST. He wanted to be free, but he didn't want to face down Jones, and doing one thing meant doing the other, so the compass was confused.
