Spoiler-free? I think.
You know, I really think I've gotten a much better sense of Vincent's character from playing Dirge than from however the hell many playthroughs of FF7 I've done now.
He hasn't changed, he's still indisputably the Vincent we know and love from 7. It's just, now that he's the protagonist, his personality gets more of a chance to shine. It's still the same Vincent, just now we have a better view of him.
In particular, his sense of humor is really getting to stand out a lot better than it did in FF7. It makes me so gleeful that this game knows its characterization so well, right down to Vincent's dry, cynical wit. Oh, Square, thank you for showing me why I still have faith in you.
(And I'm starting to really like his English voice. Wonders never cease.)

The only real change I notice is that he lurked against walls all broody-like in FF7, and now he casually lounges on things and gives us lovely crotch-shots.

Heeeee. And that can hardly be called a bad change at all. :D

(Yeesssss. Vincent does a lot of lounging and draping himself and generally posing in attractive ways.
And this is me not complaining one little bit. Yum.)

(Given his sense of humor, I suspect that he's well aware of the absurdity of the swooping-around-in-a-cape-brooding thing, and just doesn't care, or even finds it amusing in a twisted sort of way. Seems like the kind of thing he would.)
I'm generally quite pleased with the characterizations. I don't feel that any of the characters I love were done badly by.

I like the thought that Vincent finds the broody-swoopy-cape-swirling thing amusing. It would actually make sense, too - go through as much shit as Vincent did and you need to find humor in things. Even if you end up laughing at yourself. Maybe especially if you end up laughing at yourself. (Wow, I think I just fell in love with Vincent even more.)
Agreed. Everyone is characterized very nicely. The one thing I could do without is the "Yuffie's being a klutz!" humor, as that's kind of stereotypical for her character type and she can't really be that clumsy because she's a ninja. But other than that she's a living illustration of what I found so lovable about her in the original game, so all is well.

As for the rest, wow, I'm totally clueless.
