(no subject)

So I was watching some news program this afternoon, one of the TVs in the campus cafeteria is tuned to a news channel and I like getting a bit of an update while I eat. Alas, I don't remember the name of the program well enough to say what it was, but.

They were talking about the possibility of Al-Qaeda in the US, scary stuff, and the host mentioned that he'd been talking to his wife and she said she was losing hope, asked him to give her a bit of hope; and he passed this question on to the guy he was interviewing. The answer went something like:

"Well, I think the American people are the hope; they're more determined, they're more bloody-minded than [the administration?], and they know that a single American is worth more than any foreigner..."

What the FUCK?

He's right, in a sense! Americans are worth more TO AMERICA. Something called a tax system.

Any other swing on that statement is patently ridiculous. DX

Seriously. I love America, but...um. That's not patriotism. That's bigotry.

The terrible thing is that it's kind of nice to see that the devalued ones are at least OUTSIDE the country and not the opposite party on what would technically be considered "our side." We've taken the first step from being utterly ridiculous, and now just need to stop being asshats about it! What the hell, people.

I'm pretty centrist, and both sides disgust me at the moment. The Republicans are flailing and the Democrats are too busy blaming them for everything to produce anything like coherency, and the things they ARE coherent on are WRONG half the time. Don't even get me started.

Please, just make the primary system go away and bring back the smoke-filled rooms of the seventies. Then at least some of the worst effects of the polarization might abate.

Well, when you compare us to the grand majority of large chunks of land with people on them, we are great. We're awesome, in fact. That's the really sad and scary part.

The world just needs to be better.

Dammit, Roxas. You and your emo.

FINE, FINE, happy Silver (who is NEVER happy) from POKEMON. IT DOESN'T GET ANY MORE CHEERFUL THAN THIS.

Blah, dumb people. At least no one on your FL is likely to agree with the guy. IT IS A START.

Wow!

*deep breaths* There are more good people than morons, I do not need to live in the middle of nowhere in the woods by myself...*deep breaths through clenched teeth*

That's um. That's a really odd statement for regarding a country that's almost entirely made up of the descendants of immigrants. And we're not even talking fifth or sixth-generation immigrants.

As a foreigner, I'm greatly offended.

[identity profile] elanor-pam.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, don't apologize for an entire country. It's too much shit that you've got nothing to do with and nothing you can do about. And I'd have to apologize for the chinese tourists that were mugged the other day in Rio, too XD; Poor chinese guys.

I just think that guy is a prat.

Can't wait to be an ex-pat...

As an American, I'm greatly offended and ashamed.

Unfortunately, that's the problem with freedom of the press. We're allowed to broadcast anything, even bigoted shit that makes us all look bad.

But at least you can complain about it, too. Hopefully there are more people pissed at those words than just you guys.

Certainly more than just us, but a disturbing number of Americans think that way. I'd venture to say they're close to a majority.

I wonder where this kind of ideology comes from? For a country that talks so much about freedom and equality...

I'd say it has a great deal to do with the media, but I really don't know. It's like we're genetically predisposed to be asshats.

You mean, just like brazilians are genetically predisposed to play soccer and dance samba?

Was it Fox News or that Christan news show?

That's like something I'd expect to hear on Borat. :/
