Yep, I've died a thousand fangirl deaths already.
It's apparently Square Enix's sole mission in life right now to make me die as many fangirl deaths as possible.
I mean, really. First they announce FF7: Advent Children. Then they get me drooling with some media and a tantalizing shot of Vincent. Then they confirm that yes, it is Vincent, and not only that, but Tifa, Reno, and Rude are in the movie too. Somewhere in there, they also release a whole bunch of interesting Kingdom Hearts 2 screens, and note that Auron is in KH2.
Then, as if that weren't enough, they announce FF7: Before Crisis - a prequel to FF7 which stars the Turks and appears to have a younger Reno as the main character.
There's a part of me that cries out in terror at Square Enix expanding the known universe of Final Fantasy VII, which was my introduction to the series and still my favorite, but a much larger part screams with unbridled joy. I just hope they handle my favorite world with tenderness and care.
And just for shits and giggles, I have composed a brief, vague, and very wanky plot speculation on Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis.
The logo clearly shows a spiky-haired young fellow with what appears to be Reno's famous 'nightstick', back to back with a cute-looking femme Turk with a gun. I think it's safe to say that the spiky kid is Reno. He reeks Reno. His pose screams Reno at us, even without the stick. He is without Reno's symmetrical facial scars - no big surprise, after all, as Before Crisis is set six years before FF7 - so we may or may not see how he gets them.
The femme Turk looks a little like Elena, but she probably isn't. I don't remember Elena using a gun (though I could be wrong on that count), and besides, she's new to the Turks at the time of FF7. I suspect that she and Young!Reno will be the main characters of Before Crisis. She may or may not be Reno's love interest.
Both Femme!Turk and Young!Reno have a fresh, almost green look about them in the Before Crisis logo. Because Reno doesn't look especially old in FF7, I have to suspect that he is probably 18 at the youngest in Before Crisis, probably a few years older. We see him in only one of the screenshots - the other shows only one Turk, a dark-haired guy with a gun. (I would love to believe that it's good old Vincent Valentine, but wow that would mess with timeline.) So I figure that Young!Reno and Femme!Turk are the new recruits in Before Crisis time. The other Turk that we've seen in the screenshots is probably their boss, who probably recruits them. I suspect we'll play only as him for the first chunk, and the focus will probably switch to Reno later.
[Edit: Wow, more than half of that paragraph was just rendered moot. I looked back at the screenshots, and we see Femme!Turk in both; the random other guy is only in the screenshot with three Turks shown. Either Femme!Turk goes off on a solo mission at some point, or she's actually the leader. That would kick ass.]
Since we don't see the mysterious Femme!Turk in FF7, I can only suspect that she dies in the course of Before Crisis. Her death will probably traumatize Young!Reno and serve as an eye-opener for him, leading him down the path to becoming the seasoned Turk we see in FF7. Her death may or may not have anything to do with Reno's scars.
Now to wait and see if any of that was right. XD
