[Fic] Persistence

The Kingdom Hearts pairing generator spat out "Sephiroth/Roxas, PG-13, power" at me.

... I didn't quite get any slash in (probably better for sanity), and it's PG at most, and I only tangentially touched on the theme of power, but nevertheless I got something out of it. Whether it's a good something or not may be debateable, but I got something out of it! XD

Spoilerish for KH2, of course.

Title: Persistence
Words: 492
Rating: PG
Summary: They meet on a battleground; a dead man who won't become a memory, and a memory who will not die.

The Keyblade wielder was talented, Sephiroth had to admit. His small body held a deceptive amount of power; still a raw edge to it, not quite honed, but he fought with his whole heart. Perhaps he actually might be worthy of that magnificent weapon he carried. It was almost a shame to kill him, Sephiroth thought as he coiled for the attack. He so rarely had an interesting fight.

The boy sprang forward with a yell, bringing the Keyblade down with impressive force as Masamune slid upwards through the air. The two swords met, clashed, sent sparks flying - and Sephiroth blinked.

He would have sworn it had been only the two of them a second ago. But there was another boy on the battlefield, weaponless and clad in white, standing just behind the Keyblade's wielder.

'Where's your other?' the new boy asked.

'My other?' Sephiroth blinked again, bemused. 'Oh. Cloud. I expect he's in the city, pretending he can flee the darkness.'

'Hmmm.' Crossing his arms, the new boy tilted his head and frowned disdainfully. There was something in the action that was both oddly like and distinctly unlike the Keyblade wielder. 'Man, I just don't get you.'

'This does not concern me in the slightest.'

'You have all that strength... you have a being of your own, and a body you can walk around in, wherever you want to go... and you're using it like this?' The new boy scowled and unfolded his arms. 'I'm with Sora on this one. You're pretty rotten.'

'I'm sure you think you have a better idea.'

'Lots of 'em.' The new boy stared at him with the Keyblade wielder's eyes. 'Hundreds of summers' worth. But my time for that is up... So I'll just have to hope Sora hears them. He'd like them. I've got some great ones.'

'I wonder if you are expecting me to feel pity for you?'

'Naaah. I don't have any more for myself, why should I expect it from you?' He gave Sephiroth a serious look. 'But I've got a suggestion for you. You're not all there is to Cloud, you know. You should listen to his light sometimes.'

Sephiroth regarded the white-clad boy curiously. 'Who are you that you feel you have the authority to tell me what to do?'

'Me?' He gave a lopsided grin that didn't quite reach his eyes. 'I'm nobody.'

In the next instant, the boy was gone. Sora pressed forward, and in Sephiroth's split-second of disorientation he pushed the Masamune aside, breaking Sephiroth's guard just enough to get in. The Keyblade battered his body, Sora moving so damned fast for a child, and it was a few moments before he could break away and parry, taking the upper hand again. Sora responded admirably, leaping out of the way and spinning on his heel to deliver a quick strike. Sephiroth smirked and tightened his grip on the Masamune's hilt.

The battle raged on.
