I missed that sentence on my first read, then when I saw it I exploded. Instantly, all I could think of was some guy somewhere in Arizona, so much happier and comfortable with himself than he ever was as a woman, and the state tells him "No, you don't count as a man. Go put your boobs back on."

It's terrifying and appalling and how hard is it to see that it's totalitarian and evil?

Also, I love the part where if ANOTHER citizen contests your gender, YOU have to pay for the screening. And apparently just refusing the screening - maybe because, say, THE CONTEST WAS INVALID - means you don't count and don't get to marry! :Db
