I was thinking of something really eloquent to say. About this election, about Obama, about my mixed feelings of incredible joy at the overwhelming Democratic victory and crushing despair at the evident pass of Prop 102 here in Arizona, the sheer strangeness of having hope at all when the last eight years have made me from a naive girl into a very cynical woman, and about my flickerings of new resolve.

But I apparently don't think well when tipsy. Mom and I had a drink to celebrate. We got some Cosmopolitan mix out of the freezer, got down the martini glasses, and had a toast.

(The glasses are cobalt blue. I think that's an amusing bit of serendipity.)

We toasted President Obama and the next four years. And I'm a damned lightweight and I'm already feeling a little woozy and drunk, so the most eloquent thing I think I can say is:

I KNOW. I couldn't believe I was reading it, it's like. Orwell wishes he could have made this shit up. If it goes anywhere, Arizona is dead to me.

If citizen refuses such screening, they will be ineligable for marriage and referred to the Ministry of Gender for gender restoration.

I missed that sentence on my first read, then when I saw it I exploded. Instantly, all I could think of was some guy somewhere in Arizona, so much happier and comfortable with himself than he ever was as a woman, and the state tells him "No, you don't count as a man. Go put your boobs back on."

It's terrifying and appalling and how hard is it to see that it's totalitarian and evil?

Also, I love the part where if ANOTHER citizen contests your gender, YOU have to pay for the screening. And apparently just refusing the screening - maybe because, say, THE CONTEST WAS INVALID - means you don't count and don't get to marry! :Db

It's not right, targetting a specific group of people with mental disorders. It'd be something if people who received gender reassignment surgery did it for chuckles and grins, but this is just wrong.

They win either way. Man, I love this world we live in.

ALSO WHAT DO THEY MEAN BY UNALTERED AND FULLY FUNCTIONING. Are circumcised men and men with vasectomies and women who've had hysterectomies or their tubes tied NOT MEN AND WOMEN? What about people who are born intersexed? What if you're sterile, or for whatever reason, the tackle just doesn't work quite right?

Oh, you do have an interesting point there. I wonder if it'll end up applying to them as well, or if they're not going to deny that this is only about anti-GLBT legislature.
