So today proved to be awesome!
Started off the day by going to see Watchmen in a second-run theater with my dad.
I thought it was a fantastic movie - both on its own merits and as an adaptation. I can see where fans of the comic might complain. Many of the parallel plots were absent (notably the newspaper vendor and the kid reading the pirate comic, though they made an appearance at the end), and the change in Ozy's sinister peace gambit from "simulating an alien attack" to "weaponizing Dr. Manhattan" was a pretty major divergence. But I think it worked. There were so many little tiny plot threads trickling through and all feeding into that one huge plot revelation, and that worked brilliantly in the comic - a bit less so in a movie. The movie is already over two hours long, and that's with the condensed version of the plot. It would have had to be even longer to adequately set up the alien attack; and a lot of the foreshadowing they'd have to really reach for. (I'm thinking especially of the mention of the stolen psychic's brain; that in itself has so little to do with what any of the main characters are doing that trying to fit it in the movie would be hopelessly clunky.) Weaponized Dr. Manhattan got basically the same results in the same way, right down to the part where it's an incomprehensibly alien existence suddenly threatening the world. It's not what happened in the comic, but it's what worked for film.
That aside! I was really impressed with the technical aspects of the movie. And the casting was spot-on. They even cast Rorshach perfectly, which was a feat.
All in all, I thought it was an excellent movie and a remarkably faithful adaptation of the comic, all things considered.
After Watchmen, we went shopping. :D I picked up some jewelry at my store that I'd been wanting for a while, and then we got an outfit at Lane Bryant. After that, we went home, managed to tear Mom away from her gardening, and ate at Carrabba's. ♥
A very enjoyable day. Quite made up for yesterday. :D
