Nostalgia as a blunt object
Jan. 17th, 2005 02:32 amOh. My. God.
Okay, so, I'm in this guild on Gaia. In our chat thread, two of our members brought up the old game Creatures.
The memories came FLOODING. Creatures was one of the two fandoms I was ever actually active in. (The other was South Park. I was also active in alt.fan.dragons for a long time, but I don't count that as fandom. XD) I played that game all the time, I read the newsgroup all the time, I had about a million Creatures sites I went to for new cobs... There's still a few websites up, though most of the biggest and best are gone, and of the ones that remain only a precious few have even updated in the last year or two. God. I remember when this community was bursting at the seams with life and energy, and now it feels like a ghost town. Even the newsgroup, the last time I checked, felt sluggish and aimless.
More than any past fandom of mine, Creatures depresses me, because I remember when it was such a wonderful, vibrant, generally good-natured community, and now it's a mere shadow of its former glory. Sigh. :(
...
But anyway! I have digressed.
Having my nostalgia attack inevitably led to remembering my major contribution to the community: fan fiction.
I had an ongoing fic series, with several sidestories that figured into the internal canon. The series, called Grenorn, was really popular and I have no idea why! O_O This was all happening when I was, like, twelve! Thirteen! I'm nineteen now, and when I look back at stuff I wrote just three years ago I cringe in pain. My Creatures-era writing was a million times worse. X_.
And it's still archived in places, oh good god.... *writhes* I hunted it out of nostalgia, and I'm rereading the first installment now. Oh, god. Young Alyssa, meet storytelling. Please. It will be your friend. I had an idea of what a plot was, but a very dim concept of realistic characterization and a bit of a problem with showing vs. telling.
Oy. And I'll probably reread as much of the series as was archived and was not eaten on my computer by the ravages of past crashes. Because as bad as it is, it represents a real golden age in my Internet history... and I had a cast of characters that are still dear to my heart. It'll be a love-hate sort of thing. XD
(I have decided that I need a pretty, wispy Amano icon other than my Justice one, for wistful and pensive entries like this one. XD)
