Game wibble
May. 13th, 2006 05:32 amWhoa-kay. So, I finally finished Bahamut Lagoon.
All I have to say is, wow.
It is really just a damn shame that this game never made it over to America, because it's really, really good. The battle system is like what Final Fantasy Tactics should have been, albeit a little simplistic, and the battles are fun and interesting. The graphics are Chrono Trigger-caliber and possibly beyond. The story is intriguing and remarkably low on cliches. The characters, my god, you have a handful of story-central characters and a boatload of NPCs, and they all get a satisfying amount of development without bogging things down. Come on, when the battlefield salesman has backstory, you know something's gone terribly, terribly right.
It is also, far and away, the single gayest game I've ever played through. Okay, I'll grant you your Ashley/Sydney, your Sora/Riku, and definitely your Axel/Roxas; those are all pretty damn gay. But in Bahamut Lagoon you have a lovable old summoner who is very obviously and unambiguously in love with your mute heroboy, but refrains from actually doing anything because he's so insecure and focused on duty; you have an emperor and his right-hand man who more closely resemble the leads in a tragic romance than anything; you have two Manly Man Knight Captains who are attached at the hip and who dance late into the night together at a party and weep sparkly shoujo tears at each other. And you have the three street-urchins-cum-knights who are about as OT3 as anything. The gay is everywhere, and it is wonderful.
This game also has one of my favorite antagonists ever, the aforementioned emperor. I say 'antagonist' because he's lacking certain qualities necessary to be called a 'villain'... namely, villainy. He's very human, very sympathetic, very likable. And yet there's no question of why you're fighting him. I really admire the balance pulled off here.
You totally all need to go play Bahamut Lagoon. You can download a translation patch here. You can emulate it with ZSNES, and a few minutes' googling should find you the ROM. Hell, you can even hit me up on AIM and I will send it to you. My computer is fast, it won't take too long. XD
