On Last Order FFVII
So while all the rest of the fandom is downloading Advent Children, I'm waiting on that for a bit and instead downloaded Last Order raw. My Japanese skills are not yet anywhere near sufficient to understand the dialogue on my own (especially Zax - dammit, boy, enunciate XD), but given that it follows the game plot almost exactly, it wasn't too hard to understand.
- Holy crap, Zax, you are badass in a can. If I actually RPed you doing any of the crap you did in Last Order, I'd get accused of godmoding. You have Bullet Time, dammit! XD You are, like, a tiny god incarnate. What the hell, dude. Love.
- Some MPs apparently use swords. Huh.
- Tseng spells his name Zeng. And is listed in the credits as Zeng. GODDAMNIT TRANSLATORS WHY DID YOU LIE TO US. *cries*
- On that note, they apparently can't decide what Zax's name actually is. They said it aloud and it's obviously Zax, but it's written down as Zack twice, and then as Zax once. This has stopped being annoying and is now just pathetic.
- For God's sake, Tifa. Your hometown just burned, your dad got killed, about a million bad things just happened to you and that's all the emotion you can manage? I expected a bit more oomph from your "Sephiroth... SOLDIER... Shin-Ra... Mako... I HATE THEM ALL!" speech, at least. Come on, once more, with feeling!
- HOLY CRAP SEPHIROTH. As soon as I get home, I'm taking some screencaps of him - when he's talking to Jenova, he has this childishly happy look on his face, which in any more normal context wouldn't even look creepy. He really does look like an oversized little boy seeking approval from his mommy. And his fight with Zax is just... fuck. If Zax is a tiny god incarnate, then I don't even know what the hell Sephiroth is, he totally owned Zax. O_O
- Oh, Cloud. You sweet little pint-sized badass. And I thought your trick with the Masamune was awesome in the game. ♥
- ... but what THE HELL was that with Tifa? Dude, stop raping your own canon!
- Zax's scar is MIA again. Sigh. Does he have it, or not? You really do have to come to a decision on this, Square.
- HAHAHA HOJO. Your voice is so nasal and nasty and appropriately slimy. XD
- Tseng. ♥
- No Aerith, unless I missed a passing mention to her somewhere (not surprising if I did, since my listening comprehension sucks). This makes me sad... after seeing the intro on the Crisis Core trailer, which was all footage from the OVA, I'd had my hopes up to find out what their "promise" was or, you know, at least see SOMETHING about my canon OTP. Le sigh. Oh, do please let Crisis Core contain this.
- ... WHAT THE HELL KIND OF ENDING WAS THAT?!
So... overall, it was pretty interesting. It was a nice nostalgia trip, switching between Zax and Cloud's escape and the end of the Nibelheim mission. Zax was all kinds of badass, and just as wonderfully cocky as I expected, and every bit as cheerfully easygoing as he should be. Sephiroth was awesome and Cloud was just... yes. Loves on him. There were a whole damn lot of Turks. There was also Zangan, which made me so very happy. YAY SQUARE REMEMBERS THEIR MINOR CHARACTERS EXIST!
It was 99.9% canonically accurate too, which made me pretty happy - despite my bad Japanese comprehension, I pretty much knew what was going on because I played the game. XD There were slight embellishments, such as to Zax and Sephiroth's fight, but that I didn't mind at all. Also, Zax actually talked to Tifa in the reactor, which was very good - in the game he just kind of runs past her. XD; So that was good to see. There were a few details, though, where they just took one long step away from canon. In the game, Cloud flings Sephiroth into the Lifestream - in LO, Sephiroth jumps. Which is quite possibly an improvement, actually, since it really worked to show just how completely insane Sephiroth is by then.
The one I seriously object to is the part where Tifa actually regains consciousness, opens her eyes, and recognizes Cloud when he moves her to safety, and then actually talks to him. It made for a wonderfully sweet scene, sure, but, um... half the point of Tifa and Cloud's entire subplot in FF7 was that Tifa didn't know Cloud had been in Nibelheim then, and in fact thought he hadn't been. Having her see him in the reactor with his helmet off and actually realize it's him just... defeats the entire purpose of that plot.
Also, THE TRUCK SCENE. They messed with the TRUCK SCENE. Not the actual substance of it or Zax's monologue, thank the geek gods, but they added Turks in a helicopter taking aim at Cloud with a sniper rifle and Zax seeing the copter at the last moment and diving to save Cloud. I'm sorry, but what? How in nine blue hells did Cloud get to Midgar, then? And what happened to Zax's death scene? Hell, what happened? The way they ended LO was so confusing I can't even tell if they raped canon sideways or not.
Not to say I think LO was bad. No, for what it was it was pretty good. Some of the stuff with the Turks was interesting... I'm curious, now, especially about Tseng. He seems very pensive and remorseful throughout. I wonder if he knew Aerith was Zax's girlfriend... it's clear he knew about what happened to Zax, and if he knew about the relationship he had with Aerith... Hm. Want to get into Tseng's head now. :D
Final verdict: Not bad, for what it was. It could have been more accurate to their actual canon (seriously WHAT THE FUCK was that with Tifa), but hey. I'll live. I got to see Zax animated and being the cocky cheerful badass that he is, and it was overall a fun little bit of fandom geekery.
And Zax did the sword-spin thing. :D So hey.
Can't wait for Advent Children now. :3

You are my savior. ♥

Personally, I think that LO should have just ditched any pretense at a plot and gone with 20 mins of Zax being a badass. And Sephiroth being creepy. :)

... Hey, I wouldn't've complained. 8D Or possibly 15 minutes of Zax being a badass, and 5 minutes of OTP time.
