I think the way we worked it out when I was trying to help her plot was that Zack got separated from the others there -- Cloud falls, meets Aeris; Zack, losing his mind with worry, goes looking for him (& gets separated from Tifa); Cloud & Aeris see Tifa, proceed with Wall Market plan as usual; Zack runs into them on their way up to Don Corneo's and dies of a nosebleed. Or something. I don't remember how that bit worked out once he caught up to them and discovered that his new boyfriend had been dressed up in a skirt by his old girlfriend and damn, they both look fine. ^^
