It's actually three alchemical symbols mashed together - "air" on the top, "wood" on the bottom (it's the sticky-uppy thing. go ahead and get all the dirty jokes out of your system, I'll wait), and the horizontal one is "element".
Recently I have been fascinated by alchemy, especially by all the pretty pretty symbols, and decided that if I were to get a tattoo, it would have to be an alchemic symbol. Or symbols. That was a potential design for myself - I'm an air sign by the Western zodiac, and a wood element by the Eastern.
I'm using it as an icon partly because I like it, and partly because I want to see if I get sick of it before I seriously consider inscribing it on my flesh. XD
